Totems, 2013/17

Totems, Acrylic on salvaged industrial tubes with LED lights and steel bases, size varies. Installation at Tempe Center for the Arts, Conrad/Wilde Gallery in Tucson and Gebert Contemporary in Scottsdale. 2013-17.

This newest series of 3d artworks employ the polka dot as both pattern and decoration while incorporating “affirmations” as text jargon and a nod to the American obsession with the pursuit of happiness. "Affirmations" dances in a parade of pleasing peculiarity and subliminal messages across an array of three dimensional totems. Nelson says that the intension behind this new work is to “mean something and mean nothing at all.” As Freud once said, "Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar."
